IPL 2025 Mega Auction: Franchises Remain At Loggerheads Over Retention Policy. The IPL 2025 Mega Auction is set to take place later this year. In preparation for the event, the BCCI has started working on the retention policy. According to Cricbuzz report franchises are still in disagreement over the details. A final decision is expected when the BCCI meets with all the team owners in an upcoming meeting.
Contrary to previous reports, it has come to our attention that different franchises have very different views on the retention rule. While some concerns are very supportive, others are not. A majority of teams have nonetheless asked that the retention list include 5-7 players, while one team even wants to keep 8 players. On the other side of the coin, some franchises look down on the whole idea of keeping any players.
Back then, BCCI speculated that the maximum number of players retained by each franchise would not exceed 4 as a result of the constitution of a new rule at the IPL 2022 mega auction. The retention policy could go on for 3 Indian players or 2 overseas players until the rule was enforced.
IPL 2025 Mega Auction: Franchisees Remain in Dispute, Right To Match
Currently, there is no resolution from the BCCI regarding the retention policy. However, the positive aspect is that the governing body has begun the process. Since the franchisees have yet to meet, discuss, and reach a consensus, the issue remains unresolved.
The IPL 2025 will feature a mega auction where every team aims to bolster its squad. However, teams that have heavily invested in certain players will be reluctant to release them into the auction pool. If the majority opinion of the franchisees is taken into account, the BCCI may allow the retention of 5-7 players.
Some teams have requested the BCCI to renew the Right To Match (RTM) option for the next auction. The RTM was not there at the 2022 auction but it could be inducted back this time. It’s not clear which way this option can go. We will have to wait for further information after the BCCI team owners courts with the major stakeholders.
