BCCI Appoints Gautam Gambhir as Head Coach of Indian Cricket Team. Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team, as confirmed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The former India opener, who played a crucial role in India’s 2011 World Cup victory, has signed a three-year contract, succeeding the legendary Rahul Dravid. Gautam Gambhir was interviewed alongside W.V. Raman by the three-member Cricket Advisory Committee, led by Ashok Malhotra, via Zoom. Despite Raman’s detailed presentation, the committee recommended Gambhir for the role.
Gautam Gambhir will officially start his trip in July and stay there until December 31, 2027, which is the same year when the next ODI World Cup takes place. He has worked with IPL franchises Lucknow Super Giants and Kolkata Knight Riders as a mentor, but he has never formally coached a team. He quite impressively achieved the third IPL title for KKR, on May 26, only one day before the due date for the head coach application.

The IPL has reached its peak as Kolkata Knight Riders have just clinched their third championship title. One of the reasons for this was the impressive performance of their captain and now mentor, Gautam Gambhir. Earlier three candidates, namely VVS Laxman, Stephen Fleming, and Justin Langer were at their disposal. As a result, they decided to refrain from employing any of these coaches.
Jay Shah announced the appointment on Twitter, saying, “It is with immense pleasure that I welcome Mr. @GautamGambhir as the new Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team. Modern-day cricket has evolved rapidly, and Gautam has witnessed this changing landscape up close. Having endured the grind and excelled in various roles throughout his career, I am confident that Gautam is the ideal person to steer Indian Cricket forward.
His clear vision for #TeamIndia, coupled with his vast experience, positions him perfectly to take on this exciting and most sought-after coaching role. The @BCCI fully supports him as he embarks on this new journey.”
