Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024: Nitish Kumar Reddy To Debut In Perth: Nitish Kumar Reddy, a 21-year-old allrounder from Andhra Pradesh, is anticipated to mark his Test appearance with the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series against Australia. Reddy was picked for the Test series that will begin in Perth, Australia, on the 22nd of November 2024 as part of India’s bid to strengthen its squad with young blood for the five-match Test series.

His inclusion is indicative of India’s attempt to create a balanced side with the inclusion of a seam-bowling all-rounder. It is a position rendered vacant due to the unavailability of Hardik Pandya in the red-ball format.

Domestic Career Highlights

Reddy has featured in 23 first-class matches thus far, scoring 779 at an average of 21.1, which includes a century and eight half centuries. He scored a phenomenal 140 in the last Ranji Trophy season. There he had an excellent batting average of more than 50. With the ball, Reddy has picked up 56 wickets at a 27 average, with two five-wicket hauls to his name.

These displays, however, more so expressed his capability in the role of a seam bowling all-rounder. This position has been in demand by India in test matches for years.

IPL and Limited-Overs Performance

In the 2024 season of the IPL, Reddy played for the Sunrisers Hyderabad and scored 303 runs at a strike rate of 142.9 and took 3 wickets at an average economy rate of 11.39. His capacity to perform under pressure was also one of the reasons why the national selectors took notice of him.

Why Reddy’s Presence is Important

The selection for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy has an imbalance in the inclusion of all-rounders. Since experienced players such as Axar Patel and Hardik Pandya are unavailable. The inclusion of Reddy will add depth to the lower middle order and also provide an additional seam bowler with Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah. Since Australian wickets are known to be pace-friendly, his services are said to be invaluable.

Nitish Reddy’s first appearance should not be seen only as an individual achievement; it is a testament to India’s development vision to grow all players.
