Former South Africa Fast Bowler Morne Morkel Appointed Team India’s Bowling Coach. Morne Morkel, who is a former fast bowler from South Africa, has been appointed as the Indian men’s national team bowling coach, which is a huge development for Indian cricket. BCCI said that it is on September 1, 2024, that Morkel’s contract will begin. Starting September 19 in Chennai, he will be assigned to go for the home Test series against Bangladesh.
Morkel comes from an outstanding international career with South Africa and adds more experience to the role. Earlier, he worked with Gautam Gambhir at the Lucknow SuperGiants during the IPL (Indian Premier League). Reportedly, Gambhir, now leading the Indian coaching setup as head coach, recommended Morkel’s appointment.

It follows his previous job as bowling coach for Pakistan during the 2023 ODI World Cup held in India. Gambhir’s close relationship with Morkel was significant in cricket circles because they in the IPL. Morkel would take over from interim coach Sairaj Bahutule, who was acting while the team toured Sri Lanka recently.
Also joining the Indian coaches are Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate serving as assistants, while T. Dilip remains the fielding coach inside this new setup where Gambhir holds the reins of power. With this initiative, BCCI aims at bolstering India’s bowling arsenal in readiness for its international engagements.
