The boxing fraternity is mourning the passing away of former two-time heavyweight champion George Foreman. His family shared a statement on Instagram saying Foreman passed away on Friday at the age of 76.
The 1968 Olympic gold medalist passed away peacefully on March 21, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones. “A devout preacher, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grand and great grandfather, he lived a life marked by unwavering faith, humility, and purpose.”
The statement read that George Foreman was deeply respected. He was a force for good, a man of discipline, and conviction, and a protector of his legacy, fighting tirelessly to preserve his good name for his family.
George Foreman became a professional boxer in 1973. He won the world heavyweight title with a second-round knockout of the then-undefeated Joe Fraizer in 1973. This victory earned him the heavyweight title of The Ring. Foreman suffered his first career defeat to Muhammad Ali in 1974’s Rumble in the Jungle.

George Foreman retired in 1977 but made a comeback in the late 1980s. He achieved a championship for the second time in 1994 at the age of 45. Foreman became the oldest man in boxing history to win a heavyweight title with a tenth-round knockout of 26-year-old Michael Moorer. He retired in 1997 at the age of 48, with a record of 76 wins, 68 by way of knockouts and 5 losses.
Foreman was named one of the 25 greatest fighters of the past 80 years by The Ring in 2002. The Ring also ranked him as the ninth-greatest puncher of all time.

George Foreman was in the Job Corps before he turned to boxing at the age of 17. During retirement, he turned to religious vocation and became a nondenominational Christian minister in Houston. He also had his youth center.
Foreman did commentary for televised boxing broadcasts for HBO and sold hamburger grills namely George Foreman Grill. He sold the commercial rights to the grill in 1999 for $138 million.
