The turning point came when Zak Crawley got out, who had his value with 73 runs, adding to his 76 in the first innings. Jasprit Bumrah, with six wickets in the first innings, carried on from where he left off as he got Jonny Bairstow caught behind. Now India were four wickets away from victory, and the teams were off to lunch with the game clearly in the hands of the home team.
England’s hopes of a comeback in the second session were further dimmed when Skipper Ben Stokes was caught short trying to steal a quick single and was run out by Shreyas Iyer. Ben Foakes and Tom Hartley, however, provided a bit of resistance when they added 55 runs for the eighth wicket before Bumrah caught Foakes off his own bowling to eventually extinguish England’s hopes.
This was primarily on the back of India’s bowling performance, with impact-making performances by the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Ravi Ashwin. The series will now move on level at 1-1, with the tests that lie in the offing promising to be quite the engrossing contests between the cricketing behemoths.
