IPL 2024: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) Players List 2024: Full Squad, Their IPL Stats, And Probable Playing XI For Tournament. After failing to make it to the playoffs in both 2022 and 2023, Kolkata Knight Riders decided they needed a change. They brought in their former captain Gautam Gambhir as the team’s new mentor for the 2024 season. When Gambhir joined, the team let go of some big names like Shardul Thakur, Lockie Ferguson, Tim Southee, and Shakib Al Hasan before the auctions.
So, when it came to the auction, Kolkata Knight Riders had the third-biggest purse. They didn’t hold back on spending, aiming to build a strong team that could compete for the trophy again. At first, they kept quiet during the early parts of the auction. But when Mitchell Starc came up for bidding, they went all out. KKR broke the bank and signed him for a whopping INR 24.75 crore, setting a new record.
There had been some issues between Starc and the KKR management before, but they’ve patched things up recently, so KKR went for it. Besides Starc, they also beefed up their pace attack by picking up Chetan Sakariya.

The team wanted to bring in Rovman Powell, but Rajasthan Royals outbid them in the end. Then, they had their sights set on Chris Woakes, an all-rounder from England but had to pass because they couldn’t afford him. Same deal with Spencer Johnson—they liked him, but their budget just didn’t stretch far enough.
The team urgently needed an Indian wicketkeeper-batsman, so they managed to get KS Bharat for his base price of INR 50 lakh. But after splurging on Starc, they were pretty much broke. Still, they managed to scrape together enough to bring in players like Shrefane Rutherford, Manish Pandey, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman.
