IPL 2025: BCCI Is Expected To Announce Retention Rules By End Of August: It is expected that the BCCI will settle on the IPL 2025 retention criteria that will be announced by the end of August 2024. The rules would serve as a guide on retaining core players and creating strong teams for another mega auction as well. Each participating teams will be greatly affected by this decision.

Currently, there are conversations about what to do with RTM cards and so on. These were last used during the 2018 mega auction. Through this scheme, a team can bid as high as their previous player’s value at an auction. This gives the teams a second chance to retain key players who get into the auction pool.

Opinions of franchise owners on the number of retentions are varied. While most of them feel five to seven will be the ideal retention, some teams have even demanded eight retention. Some have put up a more radical suggestion of no direct retentions; instead, only RTM cards, which can make the auction more exciting and full of surprises.

Not only that, discussions are also being held on the player purse, which may go up from the current ₹100 crore to ₹120 crore. This would give more leeway to teams during bidding for top talents.

Once finalized, the retention rules will go on to cause drastic changes in the strategies of all Indian Premier League teams and throw open a hot contest for the IPL 2025 season. Hence, the decisions are much awaited by fans and franchises alike, as they will set the tone of the auction and therefore the league itself.
