IPL 2025 Mega Auction: Date, Venue, Retention Rules and Trade Window Details. The 17th season of the Indian Premier League ended on Sunday, 26th May 2024. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) won their 3rd title after beating Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 8 wickets at Chepauk Stadium. After the final all eyes are now on IPL 2025 mega auction.
IPL 2025 mega auction is likely to be two days long, referring to the IPL 2022 auction format. The previous three auctions were held in February 2022, December 2023, and December 2024. As a result, one can anticipate the auction date for IPL in 2025 being set somewhere from December 2024 to February 2025.
The previous IPL Mega Auction in 2022 took place in Bengaluru at a private hotel. However, both the 2023 and 2024 editions were held in different locations – Kerala and UAE respectively. The BCCI is expected to announce the venue for the IPL Auction 2025 soon. Dhumal, the chairman of IPL, said that the teams might be able to retain 3 to 4 players only for the IPL 2025 Mega Auction which is similar to what happened in the 2022 auction.

During IPL 2024, many records were broken but now that the tournament is over and there is still a long way until IPL 2025 starts; let’s take some time to discuss what we already know about next year’s edition Auction of the world’s biggest cricket league.
IPL 2025 Auction Trade Window Details
The retention window usually opens about a month before the next IPL auction while the trade window opens a week before the auction and closes a week before the auction begins. After the auction, the window usually reopens the next day and remains open until about a month before the start of the season.
Depending on IPL auction schedules, the window for retention is opened the month before. This means it can fall between November and January. The exact date for the 2025 Mega Auction of the IPL will soon be announced. There has not been a specific announcement regarding the trade window preceding the following IPLs, but it generally opens about a month before the auctions and closes one week before them.
A total of 204 players were sold at a staggering price of Rs 551 crore in 2022. If the cap on retention for each side stays at 4 players in IPL 2025, we may witness the same numbers but it will depend on how many players are allowed to be retained after the BCCI and stakeholders’ meeting in the next few days when they discuss this officially.
