Jos Buttler Resigns England White-Ball Captain After Champions Trophy Exit: Jos Buttler has stepped down as England’s ODI captain after the team’s early exit from ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The decision came the day after another miserable outing that saw them exit the tournament following a group-stage defeat against Afghanistan.

Tenure Achievements and Challenges

Appointment and Achievements: The grandest event in white-ball captaincy was the 2022 T20 World Cup. England won with attacking cricket combined with brilliant execution. Buttler took over the reins as England’s captain in white-ball cricket on 17th July 2022 when he replaced Eoin Morgan.

Stumbles: After a great start in the east, the team had to face an early exit from the 2023 ODI World Cup. That was also in the group stages and a semi-final finish at the 2024 T20 World Cup. This resulted in yet again the unfortunate dismissal of the English team from the tournament. This time, it was the recent Champions Trophy, where they tasted defeat by Australia and Afghanistan.

Buttler’s Statement

Buttler told the media in Karachi, “I’m going to stand down as England captain; it’s the right decision for me and the team.” I hope that whoever takes my place will develop a fruitful relationship with head coach Brendon McCullum to restore the team’s standing in international cricket.

Final Appearance and Future Possibilities

Buttler’s last captaincy act will be against South Africa in Karachi. His successor is yet to be declared by the England and Wales Cricket Board. Possible names include Moeen Ali, the vice-captain, and batsman Jonny Bairstow, both of whom add experience and leadership to the mix.

This marks a crucial leadership moment in the England white-ball and a new opportunity for the team heading into crucial international fixtures in the time to come.
