Ravichandran Ashwin Receives Padma Shri By President Droupadi Murmu. At a very elegant function organized within the sacred walls of Rashtrapati Bhavan, the president conferred the Padma Shri award upon Ravichandran Ashwin for his beautiful contributions to Indian cricket. The Padma Shri is the fourth-highest civilian honor of India. It is given for distinctive service in a wide variety of fields, including sports.
For his illustrious career as one of India’s best off-spinners, Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket in December 2024. He has taken 537 wickets in 106 Test matches, making him India’s second-highest wicket-taker in the format, just behind Anil Kumble. In addition, he has scored 3,503 runs in Tests, accompanied by six centuries and 14 half-centuries, proving that even as an all-rounder, he is ranked among India’s finest.
Throughout his career, Ashwin has taken part in many of the significant victories of India at home and overseas. His tactical skill and adaptability have earned him accolades, such as the Arjuna Award and ICC Cricketer of the Year. Ashwin is the first male cricketer to win a Padma award after Virat Kohli. The Padma Awards 2025 were conferred on 139 people working in different fields, of which Ashwin is the only cricketer to win the award this year. Other sports personalities who were awarded include hockey legend PR Sreejesh, who won the Padma Bhushan. Footballer IM Vijayan, para-archer Harvinder Singh, and para-athletics coach Satyapal Singh, all of whom were conferred the Padma Shri.
