Sunil Gavaskar’s Foundation Presents Lifetime Financial Aid to Vinod Kambli. Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar came forward to help his old friend and teammate Vinod Kambli, who has been facing severe health issues as well as financial problems. Starting April 1, 2025, Gavaskar’s CHAMPS Foundation will ensure that Kambli receives regular money for the rest of his life, amounting to ₹30,000 on a monthly basis, with an annual medical assistance of ₹30,000.
Kambli faced various health issues, including a two-week stay in the hospital due to a urinary infection last December 2024. His current situation has also come to the notice of the outside world through several worrying videos and reports regarding his health condition.
The pivotal moment came during the celebration of Wankhede Stadium’s 50 years. Kambli emotionally touched Gavaskar’s feet, which reverberated around the cricketing community. Gavaskar visited the hospital and met with doctors, including Dr Shailesh Thakur. He immediately directed his foundation to start the financial and medical assistance.
CHAMPS Foundation, established in 1999, was framed to help the financially troubled and challenged former internationals. Kambli becomes only the second cricketer to benefit from its services after the now-dead Salim Durani.

With this announcement, the former cricketer conveyed his assurance through a video, which his wife, Andrea Hewitt, shared, wherein he said, “Thank you to Sunil Gavaskar. Namaskar.” It depicts a deeper crutch of brotherhood that prevails among the members of the sport and throws light on the concept that while an athlete’s playing days may end, he must not be left unsupported.
