What Is Right To Match (RTM) Rules? Explained Ahead Of IPL 2025 Auction. As all 10 Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises preparing for 2025 auctions, one term that keeps cropping up is “Right to Match” (RTM) card. This plays a crucial role in auction dynamics, significantly impacting team strategies and player retention. Here is an expansive examination of RTM and its effects.

What is RTM?

Right to Match (RTM) is a clause that enables IPL teams to keep certain players who were members of their squad in the last season. After other franchises place bids on a player under contract with one team from the previous season, it allows the said franchise the right to match such bid, thereby retaining such player regardless of price.

How RTM Works

1. Auction Proces: Different franchises bid on the players they want in their team. After the bidding for a certain player is concluded, the group that previously had him or her in their lineup can use an RTM card.

2. Decision Window: The original team must decide immediately whether or not to use their RTM choice. If they go ahead with it, they will have to match up with the largest offer made so far on that player.

3. Limitation on RTM Cards: Each team is given only a few RTM cards, which are generally limited to two per auction. The number of times allowed reduces choices, thereby hampering team’s strategic efforts at retaining particular players this way.

The Importance of RTM in Strategy

With RTM, teams have a strategic edge over their competitors as they can hold onto the key players that are integral to their composition and gameplay. Teams must carefully consider which players to retain during the bidding process, as the addition of an air of mystery makes careful tactics necessary due to potentially large costs.

When a star performer consistently does well, his team may use an RTM card to outbid higher competitors and keep him on their team. On the other hand, inconsistent performers are usually allowed by various clubs to go while saving them for better ones.

RTM Situations For IPL 2025

Below are a few scenarios in which teams could employ their RTM cards:
Mumbai Indians (MI): MI may choose to use the RTM card on Ishan Kishan, an explosive top-order batsman who plays a vital role in both their batting lineup and wicket-keeping unit.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK): CSK could use RTM for Ravindra Jadeja, who goes beyond being simply a bowler and batsman to being one of its best fielders.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB): RCB might think about using their RTM card on Mohammed Siraj because he is one of the most consistent bowlers in the squad.
