With the Paris Olympics 2024 kick starting next week, let’s look at the richest Olympian sportspersons of all time, ranked by their net worth. While some may be regarded as legends, others are upcoming and making their mark steadily.

Despite no prize money, the Olympics bring fame and glory to participating sportspersons and their national country. Fame automatically brings in sponsorship deals, advertising campaigns and appearances.

Michael Jordan ($3.2 billion)

The legendary NBA player led the US team to Olympic gold medals in Los Angeles in 1984 and Barcelona in 1992. Michael Jordan won six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls. He has had some renowned deals with sportswear brands like Adidas, Converse, and Nike. Michael Jordan’s sealed a $1.3 billion deal with Nike in 1984.

This gave birth to the unique, but very popular Air Jordans. He infamously defied NBA rules, whereby players only had to wear white sneakers, and donned the red, black, and white Air Jordans.

Anna Kasprzak ($1.5 billion)

Anna Kasprzak is a Danish equestrian. She competed in the 2018 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. Kasprzak owns the $1.46 billion Danish shoe company ECCO, which was founded by her grandfather Karl Toosbuy in 1968, with her brother and mother. She is a successful equestrian and businesswoman. Over the years, Kasprzak has represented Denmark in the Summer Olympics.

Roger Federer ($550 million)

Roger Federer is the ATP World No.1 singles champion. He has 20 major men’s singles titles and eight singles Wimbledon titles.

The tennis great claimed victory in the 2008 Beijing Olympics doubles, a silver at 2012 London Olympics, took a break in 2016 following a knee surgery and withdrew from the Tokyo Olympics because of a knee injury that affected his performance.

Serena Williams ($290 million)

Serena Williams has made it into the history books as the greatest female tennis player of all time. She along with her sister Venus Williams are the only women in the Open Era to win Olympic gold in singles and doubles matches.

Serena Williams boasts 23 Grand Slam titles,  14 in women’s doubles and two in mixed doubles. She retired in September 2022.

Michael Phelps ($100 million)

American swimmer Michael Phelps is the most successful and the most decorated Olympian of all time. Phelps retired from competitive swimming in 2016 with the record for 23 Olympic gold medals. In the 2016 Rio Olympics, Phelps emerged as the most successful athlete for the fourth consecutive Olympics.

Usain Bolt ($90 million)

The Jamaican sprinting superstar won Olympic 100m and 200 m titles at three consecutive Summer Games in 2008, 2012 and 2016. Usain Bolt an 11-time World Champion. His antics on the track have earned him the name ‘Lightning Bolt’.

Shaun White ($65 million)

The celebrated snowboarder and skateboarder is a five-time Olympian and a 3x Olympic gold medalist. Shaun White boasts the world record for the most X Games gold medals. He also holds the most Olympic gold medals for a snowboarder.

For skateboarding, White holds the overall title of Action Sports Tour Champion. Besides skiing, Shaun White owns the label WHITESPACE and has made cameo appearances in various Hollywood films, including Friends with Benefits, and Cloud 9.

Simon Biles ($16 million)

Simone Biles is the most loved gymnast in the world. She competed in her first-ever Olympics in Rio at the age of 19 and shot to fame with three consecutive world all-around titles and 10 titles in three World Championships. Simone Biles is recognized for her floor, balance beam and vault routines.

She had the world roaring in awe when she nailed the Yurchenko double pike – the most difficult vault in women’s gymnastics – in 2023.

Yesteryear’s American sprint king Michael Johnson won four Olympic gold medals. Michael Johnson was the most greatest and consistent sprinter in the history of world track and field. Moreover, he was the only male athlete to have won the 200m and 400m at the same Olympics.

In 1996, Nike crafted a special pair of gold running spikes for him, whereby Michael Johnson became known as ‘The Man With The Golden Shoes’.
