Shreyas Iyer Takes Six-Month Break From Red-Ball Cricket. Shreyas Iyer has notified the BCCI of his intention to take a six-month break from red-ball cricket, following consecutive back issues, despite having successfully recovered from back surgery in the UK. He felt back spasms and discomfort while playing. He has opted to step back for a period to focus on his fitness and endurance.
It means Iyer will miss the upcoming Irani Cup and the Rest of India–Vidarbha team, as well as his selection in the Test match against the West Indies in the future. The BCCI has shared that it’s a well-planned break so Iyer can rehabilitate his body, work on his resilience, and return to the red-ball format after six months.
Continuity in White-Ball and also a Leadership Position
After taking a break from longer formats, Shreyas will continue to play white-ball cricket. He will captain India A in the upcoming three-match one-day series against Australia A, which begins September 30th in Kanpur. This will help him maintain match practice and continue with a leadership position, as well as get the adjustment done behind the scenes for recovery.
Selectors have appointed Rajat Patidar as the skipper for the Rest of India in the Irani Cup, taking over from Iyer. The BCCI officials reiterated that six months does not equate to an indefinite period. They expect Iyer to return to red-ball cricket, if rehabilitation goes according to plan, completely fit.

Iyer’s situation illustrates the balancing act modern cricketers are faced with between workload and longevity. The batter is confident with adequate conditioning and management; he will return in a stronger position. His immediate focus will be on regaining endurance, body strength, and match fitness. He hopes to return to the longer format later in the season.
