The announcement comes after they have released ex-captain Faf du Plessis from the franchise after a few seasons.
The major question remains, though, with the captaincy post open: will Virat Kohli return to the captaincy? Kohli has been retained at ₹21 crores. He was the captain of RCB from 2013 to 2021, and he is still the core and face of the team. Speaking about Kohli’s role, RCB Director of Cricket Mo Bobat said recently, “Virat is a central figure; he is a senior member of the team. But we have not made any decision when it comes to captaincy.” This provided even more grounds for speculation regarding Kohli’s return to command.
Former cricketers and analysts have weighed in on the decision. Ex-India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh lent his rich voice in support of Kohli’s return. “If they do not qualify, they should look to get some Indian guy. Why not bring back Virat Kohli as captain?” said Harbhajan in defense of the return. Comparing the impact Kohli has had in Bangalore to MS Dhoni’s influence in Chennai.
