World No.1 Jannik Sinner was outplayed by Aussie wildcard Tristan Schoolkate in the first set of the second round at the Australian Open in Melbourne. Sinner, who had not lost a single set of tennis since October 2024, showed his frustration on Rod Laver Arena. He was outplayed but managed to stay in the match and defeat his opponent.
Sinner admitted that it’s tough to play against someone he doesn’t know. He commended Schoolkate for serving well, saying it was better than his. The Italian said there are wildcards in every tournament and gives a challenge.
“I was struggling with the wind at first and it was a good chance to play the night session on a beautiful court,” he added.

Jannik Sinner Frustrated With Wind on Court
The defending champion was visibly frustrated with the wind swirling around the court and Schoolkate, 23, who awed the home crowd. Former American tennis player turned commentator John McEnroe expressed surprise as the Australian stunned Sinner in the first set. He highlighted that the wind shocked and frustrated the Italian.
It affected Sinner, his precision and ability to go after the ball, while Schoolkate embraced it and showed his best. But Sinner overcame the hurdles and claimed the match 4-6 6-4 6-1 6-3. He leveled the match and reined.
In a post-match interview, Sinner said he initially struggled with the wind. “The wind was breezing but it’s always much better to play in these courts on the outside courts because they are even worse.” World No. 1 highlighted that conditions can change and every day can be very difficult – it can change the level of each player.
