The growth of women’s cricket reached another significant milestone with the second edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction, held on December 9th, 2023, in Mumbai. With 165 players, including 104 Indians and 61 overseas stars, vying for a spot in the five franchises, the auction was a testament to the increasing interest and competition in the league.
In the tournament’s history, Vrinda Dinesh, an uncapped India batter, has achieved the status of being the most expensive player (uncapped). In the WPL Auction 2024, Phoebe Litchfield became the first player to be bought. Also, Annabel Sutherland has secured the top buy at Rs 2 crore from Delhi Capitals. However, Gujarat Giants have acquired Kahvee Gautam for Rs 2 crore, making her the joint most expensive player in this auction.
Moreover, Gujarat Giants and UP Warriors fought fiercely for the Australian all-rounder, who had a base price of Rs 30 lakh. Ultimately, Gujarat secured the deal and acquired the services of Litchfield for Rs 1 crore.
