PSL 2024: Shamar Joseph Joins Peshawar Zalmi After Standout Performance At Gabba. West Indies’ emerging fast-bowler, Shamar Joseph, has secured a contract with Pakistan Super League team Peshawar Zalmi following his outstanding performance at the Gabba. Joseph played a pivotal role in West Indies’ nail-biting 8-run victory over Australia in the second and final Test of their series in Brisbane.
In recognition of his remarkable display in Australia, Peshawar Zalmi signed Joseph as the replacement for England’s fast bowler Gus Atkinson. Despite not being disclosed as a Zalmi player during the replacement and supplementary draft, Joseph will be part of the team for the entire tournament, even after Atkinson’s return following the India series.
Initially, Zalmi had announced Atkinson as the replacement for Afghanistan leg-spinner Noor Ahmad, but Atkinson’s commitment to test matches in India made this impossible. The club later clarified on social media that Joseph would be the one replacing Atkinson for the tournament.
The eighth season of the Pakistan Super League is scheduled to commence on February 17 at the Gaddafi Stadium, running until March 18. Peshawar Zalmi, winners of the inaugural edition in 2017, aims to secure their second PSL title this season under the leadership of Babar Azam and the newly added talent, Shamar Joseph.
A Brave Test at the Gabba: Joseph’s Toe Injury and Historic Victory
Despite enduring a painful toe injury from a Mitchell Starc yorker on Day 3, Joseph delivered an extraordinary spell of fast bowling, consistently clocking 145 kmph. He dismantled the Australian batting lineup with impressive figures of 7 for 68. Joseph thwarted Australia’s progress on Day 4 at the Gabba, preventing them from scoring 156 runs with 8 wickets in hand. The collapse was initiated when Joseph claimed crucial wickets of Cameron Green and Travis Head in consecutive deliveries, sparking a dramatic batting downturn for Australia.
Subsequently, he dismissed Mitchell Marsh, Alex Carey, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood, running through the Australian batting order. Significantly, it was Joseph who sent the stumps flying, breaching Hazlewood’s defense, as the West Indies players jubilantly celebrated their historic win.
Joseph accumulated a total of 13 wickets in his debut Test series and was honored as the ‘Player of the Series.’ His exceptional performance prevented Australia from clean-sweeping the visitors in the two-match Test series, simultaneously helping the West Indies secure their first Test win on Australian soil since 1997.
