Teammates tried to console Ronaldo but to no avail. Ronaldo’s despair may have been triggered by Slovenia fans who mocked him for missing scoring opportunities in the match, and some even chanted ‘Messi’ to jeer him. Some fans also tried to get on the Portuguese captain’s nerves by waving Argentina shirts during the game.
It was indeed a challenging match for Ronaldo as he failed to get a score up for the Portugal side and then missed the penalty during extra time. The game finished in a scoreless draw and went to penalties.
Ronaldo redeemed himself with a shot right into the corner. Slovenia failed to score while Portugal emerged as the winner with two more goals from Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva. Portugal is now in the quarterfinals after defeating Slovenia 3-0.
Portugal coach Roberto Martinez described Ronaldo’s emotions as incredible. He believes the football star doesn’t need to care much after the career he has had and the achievements he made for himself. Martinez said Portugal is very proud of Ronaldo.

In an on-field interview after the match, Ronaldo, 39, said sadness at the start is joy at the end. He highlighted that that’s what football is – moments, inexplicable moments. In regards to the missed penalty, Ronaldo said he took a direct shot to give Portugal a boost but didn’t manage it.
He commended the Slovenia goalkeeper Jan Oblak for the good save but added that he wanted to see the penalty to see whether it was a good shot or bad. Ronaldo lamented that he hasn’t missed once all year and when he and his team needed it the most, he missed.
He praised the Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa for making three good saves. Ronaldo, who plays forward for Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr, believes Portugal deserved the win. The team played with control and authority while Slovenia only spent the game defending.
