Journey Of Top 3 Teams To The Round Of 16
1. Argentina
Argentina entered the World Cup as a hot favorite. The side was undoubtedly one of the most consistent ones in the world prior to the commencement of the World Cup. The team, however, had a shocking start to its World Cup campaign when it lost its opening match against Saudi Arabia.
The team’s 36-match unbeaten streak ended following the defeat. The Albiceleste, however, didn’t back down and initiated a magnificent comeback in the immediate next group match against Mexico.
Led by their captain, Lionel Messi, the team registered a magnificent 2-0 win to bag its first points. The team then went on to clinch the top position in the group with another sublime win over Poland in their final group match.
Lionel Scaloni’s men finished the group stages with 6 points in 3 games and beat Australia in the Round of 16 by 2-1.
2. Brazil
Another South American side that was considered a favorite to set the stage on fire during the World Cup was Brazil. The team had a fantastic start to its World Cup campaign, winning their first group game 2-0 against Serbia. Tite’s men followed it up with another fine performance against Switzerland, where they registered a narrow 1-0 win to book their slots for the last 16.
The side, however, succumbed to a loss in the final group game vs. Cameroon in stoppage time. The team will face South Korea in the Round of 16.
3. Portugal
Portugal was one of the dark horses coming into the World Cup. The side wasn’t in the best of form prior to the tournament, having missed out on a place in the UEFA Nations League semi-finals prior to the commencement of the World Cup. The Selecao, however, made a brilliant start to their World Cup campaign as they registered a high-voltage 3-2 win over Ghana.
The team followed it up with another exemplary performance against Uruguay in the second game to qualify for the Round of 16 instantly. The team, however, suffered a loss to South Korea in the final match. This didn’t stop them from finishing as group toppers, and they will next be facing Switzerland in the Round of 16.
