World No. 5 Taylor Fritz has defeated Frances Tiafoe in an all-American semi-final at US Open 2024, becoming the first American man in more than 15 years to reach a Grand Slam. He triumphed over World No. 10 Tiafoe 4-6 7-5 4-6 6-4 6-1.

Fritz achieved two records – the first American man to reach a major final since Andy Roddick played at Wimbledon in 2009, and the first American to reach a US Open final since 2006 when Roger Federer defeated Roddick. Added to that, the semi-final between Fritz and Tiafor was the first all-American Grand Slam men’s singles semi-final since 2005.

The semi-final was one-of-a-kind as it was long, and ran into five sets—a back-and-forth match, where Tiafoe and Fritz gave in their all. Long rallies dominated the match, but Fritz finally broke this spell and broke his opponent’s serve, winning the fourth set.

Fritz finally drove the match home, as a wearied Tiafoe looked on.
