After a heart-shattering disqualification from the women’s 50 kg wrestling final yesterday at the Paris Olympics, Vinesh Phogat has hinted at retirement from the sport. She created history as the first Indian woman to qualify in an Olympic wrestling final and would have had the world’s attention if she had competed and won the prestigious gold medal too.
Phogat’s disqualification shook India yesterday, with fans and supporters, as well as Indian sports personalities standing by her. However, the disqualification left me in shock. And this is evident in her social media post.
Her post on X, formerly Twitter, says:
“Mom won the wrestling match against me, I lost. Forgive me, your dream, my courage is all broken, I don’t have any more strength now. Goodbye Wrestling 2001-2024. I will always be indebted to you all for forgiveness.”
Vinesh Phogat Can Easily Play at the Next Olympics
Phogat’s fans have showered her with love, with some saying that champions never lose courage and the whole country of India is with her. Anupam K. Singh, assistant editor at OpIndia, said India lost a talented player. He believes Vinesh Phogat shouldn’t have retired, and could have easily played in the next Olympics. Singh wrote that by abruptly leaving the playing field, the miscreants in Indian politics will get the opportunity to spread more lies and malice.
Meanwhile, Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez who had lost to Phogat in the semi-final competed in the final against US’s Sarah Ann Hildebrandt on Wednesday. The American won the gold medal.
