On Day 2 of the second Test at the Barsapara Stadium, South Africa tightened their hold on the match by finishing the day comfortably ahead, while India struggled with the ball and now have their work with the bat. The visitors declared their first innings at 489 all out, leaving the hosts with a stiff task to keep up with going into Day 3.

South Africa resumed the day at 247/6, and the lower order put together an excellent recovery. Centurion Senuran Muthusamy led the way with 109 runs from 212 balls, marking his first Test hundred. The left-handed batsman struck 14 fours and was composed at the crease. Marco Jansen provided superb backing to the innings with a counter-attacking 93 from 128 balls, which included 11 fours and 2 sixes. The seventh-wicket partnership delivered a huge shift in momentum, combining for 157 runs. Keegan Petersen scored 68 at the top of the order, while Temba Bavuma added 42 to further solidify the innings.

Kuldeep Yadav was the pick of the bowlers for India, with figures of 4/102 from 28 overs. Jasprit Bumrah took 3/81 and consistently troubled the batters with pace and movement. Mohammed Siraj chipped in with 2/74. Despite creating chances, India couldn’t manufacture the decisive partnerships late in the innings, which added the extra runs to South Africa’s total.

In reply, India played tentatively and navigated the last six overs without loss to finish on 9/0 at stumps. Yashasvi Jaiswal was 7 not out in 19 balls, while KL Rahul was 2 not out in 17 balls. India trail by 480 runs, and the pressure to bat for a long period and not face the follow-on is large.
