Iga Swiatek, who was among the favorites to win, was jolted out by Jessica Pegula 6-2 6-4 at the US Open 2024 quarterfinal. The American led Swiatek in the first set at 5-2 by a double break. The Polish player’s bad serves got the better of her.
Pegula put up a great defense and forced the World No.1 to hit an extra shot. She broke in Swiatek’s initial two service games and three of the first six. Swiatek made poor calculations and Pegula, 30, took advantage of it, giving back one great shot after another. The champion showed her frustrations, a big slap on the thigh when her forehand flew wide.
Swiatek is known for her aggressive games, but this time aggression didn’t work as her opponent Pegula played with her mind and took advantage of her technical faults and poor serve. The American dominated the match and made errors too, maintained the pressure and caught the winning drift 6-2 6-4 in front of thousands of fans in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

And now No. 6 seeded Pegula is eyeing the American Grand Slam title which is just two matches away. Many Americans are vying for the US Open trophy this time, including Emma Navarro.
Pegula is set to make her play against Karolina Muchova in the semifinals.
