Jakub Mensik defeated tennis superstar Novak Djokovic in straight sets at the 2025 Miami Open final on Saturday night. The 19-year-old Czech reigned 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4) at the Masters 1000 event. Mensik emerged as the first teenager ever to defeat Djokovic in straight sets in a completed tour-level match.
He is the fifth overall teenager to defeat the 24x Grand Slam champion and former No. 1 in a tour-level match. Mensik is the second-youngest titlist in tournament history after Carlos Alcaraz who won a title in 2022 as an 18-year-old.
The 2025 Miami Open final was a match of nerves, as it was delayed nearly six hours due to rain. Mensik was the calmer player under pressure. He won the tie-breaks, improving to 7-0 in tie-breaks in the tournament. The youngster had earlier crushed Jack Draper in two tie-breaks. However, Novak Djokovic, as per Infosys ATP Stats, has the best tie-break winning percentage on record—nearly 66 percent.
Djokovic struggled with consistency. An issue with his right eye arose, so the G.O.A.T reached towards it and used eye drops during changeovers.
