Her high-bouncing topspin shots were no challenge for the No.52 who sent it back effortlessly over the net. But determination and resilience saw Swiatek emerge as the first Polish tennis player ever to make it into the singles quarterfinals at the Olympics.
The first set was nail-biting as Swiatek, 23, saved the break point and saw a double break point at 1-all, 15-40 then 2-all, 30-40, and opened up a 5-2 lead. She had early breaks in the second set 1-0 and 3-2, and broke the last one 5-4.
Swiatek, a 5-time Grand Slam champion, said it was a good game. She commended Wang for great tennis, saying she had the upper hand. The Polish player pushed the game in the right moments to take the match up a notch. She shared that it’s all about patience and not slowing down. Swiatek believes her intensity worked and she rose with her dominance.

She is keen to make up for the loss in the Tokyo Games where she fell to Paula Badosa in the second round on hard court. The youngster has won 31 of her last 32 matches at Roland Garros and has been positioned as World No.1 for the last 24 months. She doesn’t want that to change anytime soon.
Swiatek is aiming for an Olympic medal and her win over Wang shows her determination for her country. She will face US’s Danielle Collins in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
