LPL 2026 Introduces New Social Media Rule

LPL 2026 Introduces New Social Media Rule for Star Players. The Lanka Premier League 2026 has introduced a surprising new registration rule for players. Players now need at least 250,000 social media followers to register as Star or Icon players. The new rule will apply to direct signings made by LPL franchises before the player draft. Teams can still pick players through the normal draft process without follower restrictions. However, direct overseas signings must now satisfy the social media requirement.

The tournament organisers believe this move will improve the league’s global popularity and digital reach. LPL officials also want franchises to sign players with strong online fan engagement. The rule has already created huge discussions among cricket fans and experts worldwide. Many supporters questioned whether social media popularity should decide player categories in cricket leagues. Some fans believe cricketing ability should remain the only important factor during player registrations. Others feel the new system could help the league attract sponsors and international attention.

Icon Players Must Meet Cricket and Digital Criteria

Reports also stated that Icon players must meet cricket-related requirements in addition to follower numbers. A player should have played at least 75 T20 Internationals to qualify as an Icon player. Players with more than 100 franchise T20 appearances can also enter the Icon category. The Lanka Premier League started in 2020 and has grown rapidly over recent seasons. Several international stars have featured in the competition since its first edition. The league has also gained strong television ratings and online viewership in recent years.
