Mohammad Amir Gets British Citizenship, Eyes Possible IPL Return. Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has reportedly become a British citizen, creating fresh discussion about a possible Indian Premier League entry. The 34-year-old has also retained his Pakistani passport, as dual nationality is permitted between Pakistan and the United Kingdom.
Amir’s new status could allow him to register for a future IPL auction as an overseas player. Pakistani cricketers have not played in the IPL since the inaugural 2008 season. The restriction has continued because of strained political relations between India and Pakistan. However, Amir’s British passport may give him a different route into the tournament. His case is being compared with Azhar Mahmood, who played in the IPL after becoming a British citizen. Mahmood represented IPL franchises between 2012 and 2015.

Amir had earlier hinted that he wanted to play in the IPL after receiving British citizenship. He had also named Royal Challengers Bengaluru as a team he would like to represent. However, citizenship alone does not guarantee an IPL contract. The left-arm pacer must first register for the auction and attract interest from franchises. Teams will likely assess his recent T20 form, fitness, age, and availability before making any decision. His experience in franchise cricket could still make him an interesting option.
Retirement And Recent Career Status
Amir retired from international cricket again after the 2024 T20 World Cup. He had earlier retired in 2020 before returning to Pakistan in 2024. Across his career, he played 36 Tests, 61 ODIs, and 62 T20Is for Pakistan. He took 119 wickets in Tests, 81 in ODIs, and 71 in T20Is. Despite his record, his 2010 spot-fixing ban remains a major talking point. Amir served a five-year ICC ban after the Lord’s Test scandal.

Fans remain divided over his possible IPL return. Some Pakistani supporters have welcomed his new chapter. Many Indian fans have raised concerns over his past, age, and recent form. For now, Amir’s IPL dream depends on auction rules and franchise interest.
