England Bowling Allrounder David Willey Announces Retirement From International Cricket Post ODI World Cup 2023. David Willey, the England seamer, announced his retirement from international cricket on November 1, 2023. He will retire as soon as England’s journey in the 2023 World Cup in India ends.
The left-arm seamer played in three matches during the defending champions’ turbulent World Cup campaign, taking five wickets and contributing 42 runs in three innings. However, Willey clarified that his decision was not influenced by the team’s performance.
The 33-year-old entered the ODI scene in May 2015 and followed it up with his T20I debut in the same year. Over the years, he has secured 94 wickets from 70 ODI matches and contributed 625 runs with the bat. In addition, he boasts 51 wickets from 43 T20Is. Notably, Willey was a crucial part of the English T20 team, finishing as runners-up in the 2016 T20 World Cup in India and clinching the title in Australia in 2022.

Willey expressed on his social media account that, after careful consideration, he regretfully believes it’s time for him to retire from all forms of international cricket after the World Cup.
He expressed his reluctance for the day to arrive, explaining that since his youth, he had exclusively aspired to play cricket for England. With careful consideration, he regretfully concluded that the time had come for him to retire from all forms of international cricket at the end of the World Cup.
Willey mentioned that he had worn the shirt with immense pride, dedicating his all to the emblem on his chest. He acknowledged his privilege in being a part of an exceptional white ball team alongside some of the world’s finest players, creating remarkable memories and lasting friendships while enduring challenging times.

He extended his gratitude to his wife, two children, mum, and dad for their sacrifices and unwavering support, as he recognized that he wouldn’t have been able to pursue his dreams without them.
Willey stressed that he believed he still had much to offer both on and off the field while performing at his best, clarifying that his decision had no connection to the team’s World Cup performance. He affirmed that those who knew him wouldn’t doubt that he would give his utmost and more, regardless of his role in the remaining campaign, as that was his only approach.
